When I was in college the university had recycle bins for paper and cans all over campus. My conscious was heightened at that time and I found that I couldn't throw anything in the regular trash bin that could possibly be recycled. That habit has stayed with me, although I haven't always lived in areas where recycling was so easy.

I'm glad that our county has a curbside recycling program and I find that probably 80% of what we throw away is recyclable. All the paper, cardboard, plastic bottles and containers, aluminum and tin cans, go in the recycle bin. And most of what I toss in the trash is stuff that's biodegradable -- so I could probably use a lesson in composting and really reduce our waste. Our recycle bin is always more full than the regular one. I just recently read that most plastic bottles are recycled and back on the shelf in less than 90 days! Having said that, it's probably better to avoid disposable plastics as much as possible.

One other thing, in honor of going green, I've noticed that a lot of retailers have these compact flourescent light bulbs on sale this week. It's such an easy way to save energy. I replaced a bunch of bulbs a couple months ago and the only difference I noticed was on the reduced power bill.
What are you doing that's "green"?

I laughed about the "natural" beauty products!
What a shock to have an allergic reaction!
My parents had a compost pile in the backyard when I was growing up. Sure makes for great gardening fertilizer! I forgot about my energy efficient lightbulbs! I could have posted those too. Oh well. My pitiful attempt at a "green" spt will have to do. Loved your ideas!
I have never tried to make any natural beauty products.. That's so creative, but stinks that you had to find out the hard way that you were allergic to something...
Natural beauty...HA! I love the bulbs...I cringe at the price, but I've heard it pays you back in the bills...you are motivating me to go get some! I'm private, but I'll share if you email me courtneymilius@hotmail.com.
I just bought some new light bulbs. It is encouraging to hear you saw a difference on your bill.
I think the recycling habit is great--I don't think we are anywhere near 80%--good for you! Not doing composting yet, but I watched a blurb on Oprah today and was momentarily inspired.
Oh, how I wish we had curbside recycling. I make recycling my 9 year old's job, but I still have to drive her to the bins at Home Depot!
Jealous of the size of your recycling bin. Ours is pitiful. Do you like the light from those bulbs? I've bought them twice and have been disappointed with the light and thrown them away...adding to the garbage and trash out there. Horrid, I know. Great that you really noticed a change though!
I am so impressed with your recycling efforts!
Hopefully next year I'll have more to report from my household!
I so wish we had curbside recycling! We just barely got recycling bins at the local grocery store.
You're doing better than I am for sure. I wonder how much we could reduce our garbage by recycling more? I don't love the light that those bulbs give off, but I certainly do enjoy not having to change them constantly.
good for you. Got to get myself some more energy efficient bulbs!
Jessica celebrated Earth Day by starting a book called Good Earth (actually, this was a complete coincidence, since I informed her this morning that yesterday was Earth Day...).
Anyway, the book has nothing to do with Earth Day, but I thought it was worth mentioning.
I have to run all over town to recycle things, but I do it anyway.
I haven't bought any of those new light bulbs yet, but I will. I just don't like how they look when they're visible. That's a dumb reason not to buy them though.
