The Book Bag

I've always had a thing for book bags, over backpacks. But they're just not as practical if you have heavy books to lug around. Before school started, Jemma had been eyeing up all the pink shiny backpacks at the stores and trying to talk me into one. Luckily, we put off getting one and then found out that her teacher prefers book bags because they're so much easier manage for putting papers and projects in and she likes to pin notes to the outside for parents to see.
All this thinking about book bags reminded me of the book bag I had in kindergarten. It's memorable - not because it had Mickey Mouse on it - because the whole length of the top on the inside was lined with a large piece of velcro. I guess velcro was not a very common thing at that time, and when I got to school and opened my bag...you can imagine the loud and disturbing sound it made! As if I had just ripped the whole thing apart! I never enjoyed being the center of attention, which is probably why I remember this experience.
Back to 2007. I couldn't think of where to buy a book bag. They just don't seem that common. And I guess I was sort of in the mood for a project, so I made this reversible bag for Jemma:

It's quite a distraction for her in the mornings as she decides which side she wants it on.

You sew? Do you have an embroidery machine to do her name? Wow. The bag is darling, a double whammy of cuteness, I'm impressed.

When Whitney was in preschool her teacher requested tote bags as well, so I had my mom sew some ribbon and embroider Whitney's name on it, but yours is much cuter.
